Postpartum Care

Postpartum care at this time is limited to my birth clients, and further limited to daytime support for one family at a time, a few times per year.* I provide evidence-based education with a holistic approach to crossing the threshold of birth, which includes but is not limited to:

  • Postpartum education and creating a postpartum plan prior to the birth

  • Lactation support

  • Baby care

  • Light housework

  • Caring for other children and pets (dogs, cats, birds, and fish only)

  • Birth processing

  • Holistic care and healing practices rooted in traditional Pakistani and Indian culture, such as nourishing meals to aid healing and digestion, perineal/abdominal care, herbal baths, massage for the birthing person, infant massage, belly wrapping

  • Ceremonies and celebrations to mark the end of the acute postpartum period - because of my background, I draw from ceremonial practices in Pakistani, Indian, and Muslim traditions and customize them for your family, with respect to your spiritual, religious, and cultural practices.

  • Reiki and yoga nidra to regulate the nervous system and help you achieve deep rest and restoration in-between baby feeds, which aids in healing.

A note on the postpartum period from a South Asian cultural perspective, which greatly informs the way I care for my families:
The first 40 days after giving birth is called “chilla” in Pakistan, and “sawa mahina” (1.25 months) in Punjabi. This time is considered both sacred and vulnerable for the birthing person and baby, as the “veil” between this world and the unseen/ethereal realm is still lifted. They are transitioning into this new iteration of being. They will stay indoors during this time, avoid being exposed to cold temperatures, and, if nursing, nurse on demand. The birthing person abstains from household tasks, physical activity, and interactions that can cause stress or emotional upset. Trusted family members “mother the mother” and care for the family, so the new parents can heal, bond with, and nurture the new baby. Great emphasis is placed on rest and proper nourishment. By the end of this period, the new parents should feel confident in their ability to transition from receiving consistent care to caring for their baby and their own needs more independently, knowing that their support system is there to hold them when needed, as we are all called on to collectively hold each other.
